Here’s the thing: foxes are sly for a reason. They don’t just sneak around but also jump, dig, and even climb. Yes, climb. If you’ve ever thought your fence was enough to keep them out, think again!
Foxes Are Climbers. But Not Just That.
Foxes aren’t just quick on their feet but they’re also skilled jumpers and climbers. Fences up to 3 feet can be cleared in a single leap. Taller fences, even 6 feet or more, can be climbed if there’s enough grip. And if climbing fails? The ground will be dug through without hesitation.
So, What Kind of Fence Actually Works?
Not just any fence will do. You need one that’s built specifically to beat a fox’s tricks. Here’s what to focus on:
1. Height That Matters
Go for a fence that’s at least 6 feet tall. Taller is even better if you’re in a high-risk area. Shorter fences are just an open invitation.
2. Mesh Matters More
Choose tight mesh fencing with small openings (ideally under 3 inches). This stops foxes from squeezing through or finding paw holds to climb. A smooth surface like vinyl or metal mesh, gives them nothing to grip. Avoid wood planks with horizontal rails, which act like ladders.
3. Digging? We’ve Got That Covered
Foxes love to tunnel. Stop them by burying your fence at least 12 inches deep, or install an L-shaped apron at the base. This creates a physical barrier that foxes can’t dig past.
4. Add a Roll Top or Tilted Edge
Install a coyote roller (a spinning bar on top of the fence) or an outward-tilted extension. These make it nearly impossible for a fox to climb over, even after jumping.
5. Electric Top Strand: Optional, But It Works
In rural spots or properties with poultry, a low-voltage electric wire can be added to the top of the fence. Just make sure it’s installed safely, within legal limits, and by a professional.
6. Build with Tough, Long-Lasting Materials
Thin mesh will be torn, bent, or chewed. That’s a fact. Strong, galvanized steel or coated chain link should be used instead. Vinyl or aluminum fencing works too but only if the base is tightly secured and the posts are deeply anchored.
Don’t Let a Fox Outsmart You!
With the right height, mesh, buried base, and top protection, your fence can stop even the sneakiest fox in its tracks!
