Fencing For Monkeys

Monkeys are clever. They climb. They leap. And they love finding ways out. So when it comes to fencing for monkeys, you need a strong fence. Let’s see what type of fences are the most suitable ones!

Why You Can’t Use Just Any Fence

You wouldn’t use a garden gate to hold a gymnast, right? The same goes for monkeys. Regular fences like chain link or wood won’t cut it. These little geniuses know how to climb, chew, swing, and even dig. They’ll test every corner, every edge. So your fencing needs to be:

  • Tall enough to discourage jumping
  • Strong enough to stop chewing or bending
  • Enclosed at the top and bottom
  • Smooth, with no toe holds

Welded Wire Mesh – The Gold Standard

  • Material: Thick galvanized or stainless steel
  • Design: Small openings (usually 2”x2” or smaller)
  • Why it works: Hard to climb, impossible to squeeze through, and weather-resistant

You can build it vertically, curve it inward at the top, and even cover the roof using the same mesh to make it fully escape-proof.

Electric Fencing – A Smart Deterrent

  • Use it as an added barrier, not the main one.
  • A few wires at strategic points (especially at the top) can discourage climbing attempts.
  • Always low-voltage and ethically safe—just a reminder, not punishment.

This is popular in wildlife parks where full overhead covers aren’t always possible. It works like a polite but firm “Hey, stop right there.”

Fully Enclosed Structures – No Monkey Business

It’s preferred to use either:

  • Welded wire mesh
  • High-tension netting (for lightweight setups)
  • Metal-framed roofs that blend security with airflow

These enclosures give your monkeys space to climb and play safely.

Height and Design – Go Big or Go Home

Monkeys don’t respect short fences. Our minimum recommendation is 10 feet—but we often go taller depending on the species.

Key design features:

  • Curved tops – So they can’t swing out
  • Buried mesh or concrete footing – So they can’t dig under.
  • Double-gate entry systems – Because if you leave one open, they’ll know.

What Doesn’t Work (No Matter How Pretty It Looks)

Let’s bust some myths.

  • Wooden fences? Nope. They chew. They climb. They wreck it.
  • Plain chain link? Only if modified. Otherwise, it’s just monkey stairs.
  • Barbed wire? Big no. Dangerous and outdated.
  • Short fences? That’s just a warm-up challenge for them.

Monkeys are well-known for lifting latches, scaling corners, and pulling panels apart. That’s why your first design needs to be the right one.
