Why does my fence estimate look so different from each fence company?

You need a new fence at your home and have contacted your local fence companies to receive new fence estimates or even a fence quote to repair your existing fence. Now, it is time to compare the fence quotes to decide which fence company you want to trust to install the new fence at your home. You’ve put the fence quotes you have received side by side, and that’s when the homeowner’s headache begins. Some of the fence estimates seem cheap and some appear to be overpriced, how do you compare fence quotes with each other to be sure you are choosing the right fence company for you?

Is the layout of your fence project the same on both fence estimates?

If you see a significant discrepancy in the pricing between fence estimates, you should first check if each fence company quoted you for the layout you need. A good fence company will provide you with a comprehensive sketch or plan for the project. This fence sketch should show you each fence line that will be installed. Each fence line should show the respective measurement for that fence line. The fence plans should also show your home and where the fence will be placed in relation to where the building is located on the property. When possible, the property lines should be shown on the fence plans. You want to ensure the fence does not encroach beyond your property boundaries, which can cost you more money in the long run. Check the total linear footage on each fence estimate and compare it to the footage shown on the fence sketch. Make sure you are being quoted for the fence layout you’ve decided on. Most importantly, ask the fence company questions and have them clarify the layout in writing. You want a fence company to build the fence where you need it, and you want to pay for what you thought you were getting.

Is the fence material the same on both fence quotes?

A common inconsistency in fence quotes is that many fence companies use different materials. Is your privacy fence quote for a vinyl privacy fence or a wood privacy fence? Is each fence company using the same quality material? Almost every fence material available on the market has different grades and thicknesses, including vinyl fences, wood fences, aluminum fences, farm-style horse fences, and chain link fences. There are also different types of lumber and different grades of lumber used in fencing. Pressure-treated pine is a common type of wood used for wooden fences, but it has many different variations in thickness and finish quality. Your fence company should take steps to ensure your gate has heavy-duty posts to support its weight. Is the fence company using pre-made panels, or are they constructing your fence on-site? These are all crucial factors to consider when choosing the best fence company.

Are the fence companies selling the same fence service?

Simply put, not all fence companies are built the same. The service you are receiving from your fence company doesn’t begin and end with the fence installation. Is your fence company responsive when you need it? A good fence company doesn’t keep you waiting and will be transparent when you ask them questions about your upcoming fence project. Was the price for your fence fair from the beginning? Does your fence company pressure you to make decisions quickly, or do they understand the stresses of buying a fence as a homeowner or business and provide the information you need to make your own decision? Make sure to know how the fence is being built and compare that to the competition. If you are looking for a high-quality fence that will be built to last, then avoid companies that use prefabricated wood fence panels and privacy vinyl fence panels. These are usually provided by fence contractors or fence installers looking for shortcuts or lack the fence experience or tools to custom-build your fence for your property the right way. A reputable fence company will always provide a warranty for their work and all applicable fence product warranty information. Make sure you have the warranty in writing on a contract signed by you and the fence company.

Is your fence estimate itemized, or did the fence company group everything in their quote?

Many fence companies try to avoid transparency in their pricing in the way they write their estimates. Some fence companies group everything on the project together in one line on the estimate with a total price next to it. In contrast, other fence companies will itemize each project component and provide pricing for every aspect individually. When comparing a fence quote from one fence company to another, make sure you understand where the costs are coming from. Check your fence quote for a price per linear foot for the fence installation, the price for each of the gates, how much you are paying to remove your existing fence, and if that removal cost includes haul away and disposal of the old fence. If your fence posts are going into a concrete driveway or deck, make sure the quote covers the cost of core drilling or cutting into the concrete, and ask your fence company what the charge is for that service.
