Fence Permit
A building permit is required for all new fence installations and replacements in the City of Atlanta. Applications are submitted to the Department of City Planning, Office of Buildings, Express Permits Division. Applications can also be submitted electronically through the standard residential or commercial submission workflow. For more information, contact the Express Permits Division for guidance before starting work.
Height Limits
In front yards, fences may not exceed four feet in height and must be at least 50% open in design, meaning chain-link, wrought-iron, or picket-style fencing are the permitted front-yard options. In back and side yards, the maximum fence height is six feet. Fences exceeding these heights require a Variance submitted through the Office of Zoning and Development.
Historic Districts and Special Public Interest Districts
East Atlanta includes several historic districts, including Druid Hills, Morningside, and Virginia Highland, as well as Special Public Interest Districts where additional design review applies. Properties within these areas must obtain a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Urban Design Commission before a fence permit will be issued. If your property is located within a historic or SPI district, confirm the requirements with the Office of Design before submitting a permit application.

Installing a fence without the required permit or in violation of the city’s height, material, or design standards can result in stop-work orders, fines, and mandatory removal at the property owner’s expense.
