Can You Replace One Section Of Fence?

Sometimes, fences break. A post leans. A panel splits. A storm hits. But do you really need to replace the entire fence? The short answer is not really. You can absolutely replace just one section. But the real question is: when, how, and is it worth it? Let’s break it down.

Spot The Damage: Is It Just One Section?

Before grabbing tools, take a good look.

  • Single board or panel missing? That’s an easy fix.
  • Rot at the base of one post? Still manageable.
  • One gate sagging or detached? Often repairable without touching the rest.

Types Of Fences That Allow Section Replacement

Not all fences are built the same. But many are designed in segments, making sectional replacement possible.

Wood Fences

Wood is forgiving. We may remove any broken pickets, rails, or panels and replace them with wood that matches.  Cedar and pressure-treated wood typically blend in nicely, particularly after staining or sealing.

Vinyl Fences

Thankfully, vinyl fences are modular. Damaged panels can be snapped out and swapped with new ones. As long as the posts are solid, replacement is a breeze.

Aluminum Fences

Broken pickets or rails can be replaced if the fence uses screw-fastened connections. Welded models are trickier but not impossible.

Chain link fences are repair-friendly. A cut section can be replaced, and tension wires re-secured. If the post is bent, it may need digging out and re-setting.

When Should You Not Replace Just One Section?

Sometimes a section fix is just a short-term patch.

  • Severe leaning or rotting posts. If the post is shared by multiple panels, fixing one section might not hold.
  • Old fences with discontinued materials. Matching style, texture, and color can be a nightmare.
  • Widespread rust or termite activity.

How Much Does It Cost To Replace One Section?

The price depends on:

  • Fence type (wood, vinyl, chain link, etc.)
  • Extent of damage
  • Material availability
  • Labor and equipment needed

On average:

  • Wood panel section: $150–$350
  • Vinyl section: $200–$400
  • Chain link repair: $100–$300
  • Post replacement (with concrete): Add $80–$150
