Big Jerry’s Fencing, Winston-Salem Permitting Requirements
Winston-Salem is the county seat of Forsyth County. It has its own Unified Development Ordinance and also follows the county rules and regulations. As such, property owners will need to follow two sets of rules for fence installations.
Fence Permit
Building permits are required for fences over 6 feet in any dimension. The same is also the case for Forsyth County rules and regulations. So owners will have to apply for two sets of permits for their fences. Big Jerry’s Fencing can help owners with that and apply for permits.
Setback Requirements
Fence placement is regulated under the Unified Development Ordinance, including yard location rules, corner-lot visibility standards, and easement restrictions. Please remove the claim about no setbacks and instead state that fence placement must comply with zoning standards and should not encroach on easements or sight-distance areas.
Penalties of No Permit
Installing a fence without a required permit can lead to a stop-work order, fines, and penalties as defined under the City’s Code of Ordinances. In some cases, legal action can also be taken against the property owners.

Big Jerry's Fencing has been awesome to work with and installed a great looking fence. Were able to finish in two days even with some rain delaying the project. Requested quote - recieved in speedy time. Once agreed on quote, job was scheduled and done to our standards. Maria in office was a pleasure to work with. The driveway was left with forklift tire marks all over it, she quickly scheduled a crew to come out and power wash it-- looks brand new again. Great service and would recommend highly. Big Jerry’s was a life saver. We ran out of time to install the fence at our new house. We had the materials, but needed a quick install. The owner, Maria, sent us a fair quote very fast. They scheduled install within days. The crew showed up as promised and worked harder than any crew we have seen. They did an excellent job and got it 100% complete in 2 days. It was a pretty big job, about 400 feet of post and wire fencing with 2 gates. It turned out beautiful and sturdy, even with a bit of a steep grade on one side.
Biggest thing is everything was completed as promised, unlike most things nowadays.
I highly recommend them. The first company we called tried to charge 75% more for the same job.
