Behr Premium Stains
For mold and mildew stains, and to restore the wood’s natural color, use BEHR PREMIUM STAINS All-in-One Wood Cleaner. See our how-to’s “Prep Your Wood: New Wood” and “Prep Your Wood: Weathered Wood” for guidelines on properly preparing your wood surfaces.
Apply BEHR wood stains and finishes with a quality pad applicator, brush, roller or sprayer. Make sure to follow all label instructions.
A quality pump sprayer may be used when applying wood finishes as well as semi-transparent stains.
Always back-brush to ensure even application.
Apply to vertical surfaces first, being careful not to drip onto any horizontal areas. Work with entire board lengths–including the ends.
Apply even coats and allow ample drying time before exposing the surface to foot traffic and rearranging plants and furniture.
Preparing an Uncoated Wood Surface
Wet surface with water prior to cleaning. Using a pump sprayer, apply BEHR PREMIUM® All-in-One Wood Cleaner No. 63 to the wood surface. Keep the surface completely wet with a solution for 10-15 minutes. Scrub surface using a stiff bristle broom or brush. Reapply the cleaning solution as needed to keep the surface wet. Thoroughly rinse the surface area with clean water using either a garden hose with a high-pressure nozzle or a pressure washer. Continue the process until the entire project area is complete. Allow the area to dry completely.
Preparing a Coated Deck Surface
Using a ro
ller or nylon/polyester brush, apply BEHR PREMIUM® Stain & Finish Stripper No. 64 to a small section of the coated wood deck surface. Reapply the stripper as needed to keep the surface wet for at least 15 minutes. Do not allow the product to dry.

Most deteriorated finishes will start to lift after 15-30 minutes. Using a stiff bristle broom or brush, scrub the section after the finish begins to lift. Thoroughly rinse the surface area with clean water using either a garden hose with a high-pressure nozzle or a pressure washer. Repeat the process of applying product and scrubbing in small sections until all peeling coating has been completely removed. Apply BEHR PREMIUM® All-In-One Wood Cleaner No. 63 to clean and neutralize the surface prior to coating.
