Fence Permit
While there is no formal requirement for a fence permit prior to installation, there are rules governing the dimensions of permitted fences. For front yards, fences cannot be higher than 4 feet. While in side and backyards, fences cannot be higher than 8 feet.
Local Municipality Rules
Always consult the Inspection Department to understand current ordinances, as they vary by zoning, property lines, and HOA rules. The City of Washington requires a permit before installing a fence. Towns of Plymouth, Roper, and Creswell require zoning permits.
Penalties of No Permit
Inability to secure the necessary local permit may result in substantial fines, a stop-work order, or an order to remove the non-compliant fence.
