Kinston merged its permitting structure with Lenoir County in January 2023. Understanding the new requirements can help prevent delays or costly corrections later.

The official Kinston Town requirements for fence permits and installations aren’t publicly given. However, a Certificate of Appropriateness is required before installing a fence in a historic district. In Lenoir County, a fence permit may be needed for installation near easements, in floodplains, or above certain heights, even for a replacement fence. Big Jerry’s Fencing can help property owners apply for permits if needed.
Penalties of No Permit
Installation without proper permits leads to fines, stop-work orders, and mandatory removal at the owner’s expense. In some cases, legal action can also be taken.
