Big Jerrys Fencing Durham Permitting Requirements
Depending on the fence’s height, location, and zoning category, Durham County may require a zoning permit. The property boundaries must be verified before fence installation to ensure they do not encroach on nearby easements or properties.
Fence Permit
Durham County and the City of Durham do not require permits for standard residential fences, except for pool barriers, properties in designated flood plains, or retaining walls over 4 feet.
Height Restrictions
If the fence is located in the side or rear yard, the maximum allowed height is 8 feet, except for corner lots. Front yard fences cannot be higher than 4 feet. You will need a permit if a fence is used as a pool barrier on parcels of single-family dwellings. Commercial fences/walls under 6 ft. do not require a building permit.
Penalties of No Permit
Fences erected without required approvals or permits may be subject to fines, removal, modification, or demolition.

I had Big Jerry’s install a 4 foot wooden privacy fence in a yard of a home my wife and I recently purchased. The home had an irrigation system for which I had a few very details on where the plumbing actually was located since I didn’t install it. Edwin and the guys from Jerry’s were very diligent in ensuring the didn’t hit the irrigation system while they were hand digging the post holes. I really appreciated this. The fence looks great. They cleaned up and left my yard clean of debris. Very happy with their work.

Highly recommend Big Jerry’s for anyone looking to install a fence in their yard. They are professional. Their prices are competitive and reasonable.They respond to questions quickly.. They are very efficient in communicating. The installation crew are punctual and clean up after themselves. We have a sloped yard and they did an amazing job making our fence look smooth and seamless. We liked them so much, that we brought them back to do another smaller decorative privacy fence. The quality of the fences are. Excellent. We used an aluminum (4’ Elon) fence for the perimeter of the yard, and the horizontal wood fence (skyline deluxe ) for the privacy decorative fence.

The entire Big Jerrys team made the entire process very enjoyable. From design to completion they were communicative and always helpful. Front office & sales staff were stellar. The Cannonball & aluminum fence they installed on our property is quality & absolutely gorgeous. Fredy & Ramon are the Picasso of fence installation.
